Today marks a day in the history of student media at Leeds Metropolitan University. We have brought together all three areas of our media on to one site. This creates a new, exciting and informative site to connect with the students at the university.
The Met Online will aim to be the first port of call for any students at Leeds Metropolitan University to find out about news, reviews and observations on campus. In the very near future The Met Online will also provide a platform to stream our student radio station Met Air from. Students Union President Yasser Ranjha said
‘Although it may seem a shame that we are no longer going to have a printed paper, this is a step in the right direction in-line with the move to digital made by other national newspapers.’
In the past our student media has produced a variety of high quality. Fast turn around piece’s. Ranging from Students Union and University events, to external promotions. Within this time the team have interviewed many known artists and celebrities such as Radio One’s Nick Grimshaw and Zane Lowe, NUS President Arron Porter, bands such as Goldfinger, Alexisonfire , Future heads and Beatamax. Met TV have also celebrated success with the national student TV movement, picking up an award within its first year. Within its first 2 years Met TV have brought in a estimated 30,000 views on YouTube. Met Air an estimated 1700 listens. This site has been designed to bring these areas together alongside great journalism.
The newly elected deputy editor Antony Moran said that he is ‘Really looking forward to working with the rest of the team… Everyone involved is clearly dedicated and enthusiastic, just what we need to make this into the huge success it can be…’
Special thanks must to the team at Magpie comm’s who have developed and designed this site. They have been a delight to work with and couldn’t have produced a better outlet for our student media.
Associate President of Community wellbeing, Jo Johnson said‘the met online is a fantastic new/media resource. It can be kept up to date efficiently quickly. Its assessable 24/7 and provides student fantastic opportunities to get involved’
From everyone in the new team we hope that you get involved in our stories. We want to know what you think! We also want as many students as possible to get involved with the site, so if you have an interest in journalism, photography, design, PR or just have a great story, no experience is required!! As a former Leeds Met student and writer for The Met newspaper, I’m delighted to see you guys take the plunge and launch online.
It’s a step in the right direction and as you rightly mention, this is a trend mirrored across newsrooms up and down the country.
Going from print to online enables you to greatly reduce costs and gain valuable insight about your readers.
Here’s three tips:
1. Are you using Google Analytics? (or something similar)
2. Have you thought about Google AdSense?
3. Check out this deck on SR2 blog: http://tinyurl.com/6ljqvcp
