Unless you’ve been asleep for the past three years, any music savvy student familiar with Leeds’ alternative night life will be aware of Nation of Shopkeepers. Formerly The Courtyard, Nation (as the cool kids often refer to it) is renowned for its live music – playing host to both local and further afield bands, arty decor, good food and its famous resident party No Bones, a night that reassures that it is “nothing pretentious, just bags of energetic fun”.
Starting out as a weekly club night in 2009, No Bones eventually became a haven for gigs, putting on the likes of Best Coast, Cold Cave, Real Estate, Spectrals, Harlem, Fucked Up, Trash Talk, Cerebral Ballzy, Lovvers, Mazes, Blank Dogs, Mountain Man, Washed Out, Blank Dogs to name but a few. So, if you’re lucky, you might just catch some veritable gems!
If you’re a fan of indie, electro or hip hop, you won’t be disappointed; No Bones boasts a variety of music that is a welcome alternative to the unsightly catastophes of Call Lane. The bar staff are friendly and the price of drinks are relatively average for Leeds, but be sure to sign up for a regulars card while you are there – this allows you to get certain drinks at a discounted price. NoS also wins my vote for having one of the best beer gardens in Leeds: it’s spacious, heated and quirkily decorated with bunting and fairy lights, also making it an appropriate pre-No Bones hang-out.
