Event: Don’t Falter
Where: Baby Jupiter
Date: Saturday November 3rd, the first Saturday of every month thereafter
The first Saturday of every month sees Baby Jupiter playing host to Don’t Falter. Launched in 2010, Don’t Falter has since been a welcome alternative to the abundance of generic dance/pop nights for Leeds’ rock’n’roll brigade, and continues to offer something more than your average indie night by putting on new, exciting bands ranging from Leeds’s finest to veritable gems from further afield.
Hidden away amongst a plethora of offices, this unassuming basement bar is not easily stumbled upon. The venue itself propels you back in time to the 1960′s with its retro interiors and colourful surroundings. It also oozes a cool and cosy vibe that’s perfect for both hyperactive cavorting and chilled socialising to the soundtrack of some superlative music.
Don’t Falter’s hospitable DJ’s pride themselves in playing the best in indiepop old and new; as well as Britpop, post-punk,
glam rock, glum rock and shoegaze classics. You can expect to hear: Belle & Sebastian, Hefner, Herman Dune, The Magnetic Fields, Pulp, Stereolab, The Shirelles, Saint Etienne, Spearmint, The Velvet Underground, Jonathan Richman, Ballboy, Felt, Grandaddy, The Supremes, Jacques Brel, The Beach Boys, Pulp, Graham Coxon, Elastica, Kenickie, The Smiths, David Bowie, The Cure, Eddie Cochran, The Four Tops, Orange Juice, Pavement, The Fall, Super Furry Animals, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Franz Ferdinand, Weezer and plenty more!
Bands they’ve had so far include: The Sequins, The Wind-Up Birds, The Seven Inches, The Whatevers, This Many Boyfriends, Men Only, Post War Glamour Girls, Shirley Lee amongst many others.
This Saturday 3rd November is Don’t Falter no.27 and features a live set from The Container Drivers, who are “a bit like The Fall, and a bit like Wire, and they occasionally use a Stylophone. They’re wry, clattering and loud”. www.containerdrivers.co.uk
The night will also include a preview of By Hook or By Crook, a 12 track compilation album due to be released on Sturdy Records on November 12th that features some of the best music coming out of Leeds at the moment; with exclusive material from Post War Glamour Girls, The Wind-up Birds, The Seven Inches, Downdime and more. www.sturdy-records.co.uk
Don’t Falter is held on the first Saturday of every month 9pm-2am, entry is free.
