Tame Impala have unveiled the lead single ‘Elephant’ off of their second album due in October. After the success of 2010’s psychedelic debut album ‘Innerspeaker’ the Perth based band toured heavily and after recording a critically acclaimed and excellently received album with side-project Pond they are back readying the release of their sophomore LP ‘Lonerism’.

The track’s opening plods heavily with the menacing drum beat and fuzzy guitars sounding like a glam, Marc Bolan worshipping, Queens of the Stone Age. As Kevin Parker’s distorted monosyllabic vocals intertwine with the music, the song just about becomes predictable, until in a wonderfully surreal breakdown the expansive guitar and retro synths take off in a psych-jam that is like, totally mind-blowing, man.

The lyrical content of outsider, rock weirdo, sniggering at the cocky jock is tried and tested territory, but opening lines; ‘Man he feels like an elephant, shakin’ its big red trunk for the hell of it’ is one of the most bonkers and therefore incredibly cool rhyming couplets of the summer, especially delivered as it is, drenched in Sergeant Pepper’s era Beatles vocal harmonies.

The track ends on a deliciously bizarre drum solo that perfectly fits in with the theme of barely controlled chaos; the driving, groove filled bassline the only element holding the track together. On this evidence Tame Impala are looking to take off where they left it, only even more peculiar, even more psychedelic and even better than before.
