Leeds Grand Theatre is one of the region’s most distinguished cultural institutions; built in 1878, the theatre has been a Leeds attraction for 134 years. A refurbishment in 2005 brought the theatre back to its former glory for up to 1550 people to enjoy. Over the next two weeks the location will play host to two very different yet equally interesting productions. Read on for more info.

Travelling Light

A fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams. A filmed performance of the show was broadcast in cinemas across the UK and the world in February as part of National Theatre Live.

Calendar Girls

An inspiring true story from Yorkshire. When Angela Baker’s husband John died suddenly from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma her friends from the Women’s Institute in the North Yorkshire village of Cracoe decided to put together their own version of a Pirelli-style calendar with a view to generating funds for a new sofa for the hospital where John had been treated. To date they have raised over £2million for Leukaemia Research, have been the subject of a smash-hit Hollywood film starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters and filled more column inches than they can count. Calendar Girls is now an award winning stage production and this return to Leeds Grand Theatre will be for the very last time.
